Artemis Montague is a Producer, Musical Theatre Writer as well as the creator of this blog, “Reflections of a Life Renewed”, an intersectional leftist-feminist sociological exploration of life, philosophy politics, accountable spaces, and art.
Sociology and Gender Studies
Having received an undergraduate degree in Women and Gender Studies (with coursework in African Black Diaspora Studies, Political Science, Public Policy, International Relations, and Sociology), they have dedicated much of their time since to DEIA(IA) (DEIA with Accessibility, Intersectionality, and Accountability added), developing liberatory values, and social justice. Their musicals concern topics such as the mental health industrial complex; the struggle to survive late-stage capitalism vs. making art; and the revolutionary nature of radical self-love and community building. They were going to pursue a PHD in Medical Sociology and a Human Rights Law degree in order to eventually join the UN, but they instead wrote the first draft of their first musical (She Sings Me Home) in 2017.
Musical Theatre
As a Musical Theatre Writer, they have 3 Black-, trans-, and queer-led rock/R&B/gospel musicals:
- I. She Sings Me Home (SSMH)
- SSMH is a Black-, trans-, and queer-led show depicting a view of the mental health industrial complex via a young WLW love story. Musically influenced by jazz, blues, gospel, rock, R&B, and soul music, this piece received a workshop during the pandemic in November 2020 at The Kennedy Center, in partnership with Ally Theatre Company, in the now-defunct Page to Stage Festival. After a successful concert at the Green Room 42 in February 2023, the musical had a 29-hour Equity workshop at Round House Theatre in Bethesda, MD in May 2023 and was presented at the 2nd Annual Broadway Shark Tank in NYC in October 2023. The show then had a developmental reading at Caveat in NYC, funded by a 2024 Map Fund Grant, in February 2025. She Sings Me Home was also a Semi-Finalist for the 2025 Eugene O’Neill National Musical Theatre Conference. Jenna Cox-Hadley, Angela Ortiz, and Chris Bulle-Goyri arranged the show.
- II. How Baby and the Ancestors Started a Revolution (BABY)
- Formerly How Baby and the Ancestors Attempted a Revolution), BABY is a musical about “Baby”, a Black gender-unidentified person, who is visited by ancestors the week before Baby’s participation in a political action outside Cook County Jail. This show uses R&B, neo-soul, gospel, trap, and hip-hop to tell the story. The first draft was finished by Montague as a MacDowell Artist Colony Fellow in July 2024. The show then underwent heavy revision in July/August 2025 with Jenna Cox-Hadley joining as the musical arranger.
- III. Rhapsody in Sunflower Yellow (RISY)
- RISY shows the breakdown on the protagonist – Echo – as they seek to write a musical about celebrated painter Vincent van Gogh but struggle with their own demons while Vincent van Gogh is facing himself in the Saint Remy Hospital in 1889. The show is about artistic struggles around celebrity, artistic and personal legitimacy, and personal agency; traumas; and problems with love, friendship, and mental health. It uses jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, and soul music. Montague wrote the first draft early in 2022 then started rewriting the show in September 2025, with Jenna Cox-Hadley joining as the musical arranger.
Montague was honored with a 2023 National Disability Theatre Grant and a 2024 MacDowell Artist residency – where they wrote the initial draft of How Baby and the Ancestors Started a Revolution. Their debut Joe’s Pub concert as a musical theatre writer was on July 29, 2026 at 7pm in NYC. The concert, called PLAYLIST FOR THE LIBERATED SOUL: THE MUSIC OF ARTEMIS MONTAGUE, showcased their independent music as well as music from their 3 musicals. They were a participating Lyricist in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop for a short time in 2022/2023.

Independent Music
They have over 200 songs, one of which was a finalist for the 2022 Write Out Loud Contest (“friend”), received an AudioFemme Agenda Grant in May 2023 to record an EP of original music, and have released 2 songs – “could you (I’m yours)” and “gets none” – as an independent singer-songwriter.
